Saltash Sailing Club hold a winter series of talks and I was keen to attend the one given by the Kings Harbour Master, Rob Giles, as we sail in the waters that he has responsibility for and I thought that I might know his parents.
After dashing down to Saltash after a day working as a bouncer usher at University of Exeter's winter Graduation Ceremonies and popping into the local chippy for a bight to eat before the talk started my wife and I settled down to listen to him.
Rob started by giving an explanation on the different type port authorities and their legal status, and the role of the Harbour Master. All quite technical and complicated as things usually are in the UK.
He then went onto describe his role in the job, basically keeping the port open for military use, and making sure that all of the other users can do so safely.
Following his talk I managed to confirm that I did know his parents. It is a small world.
