Time to Swallow my OYT Anchor

Friday 31st October 2025

1200 hrs

Back in April I had sailed on Prolific for two trips, P25-03 and P25-04, with crew. During those trips it became apparent that my hearing was causing me problems. I was struggling to hear what was happening on deck and more distressingly when the entire group got together in the evenings. A group of teenagers are always loud, but the noise was getting to painful levels. Usually, I worked round the problem, by making sure I was facing people when they spoke on deck or heading off after supper to the aft galley with a brillo pad in hand to scrub pots and pans as it was quieter.

One particular night I lay in my bunk quietly grappling with the problem and coming to the conclusion it was time to 'swallow this particular anchor'; this would be my last season as Sea Staff. Originally, I planned to finish in 2026 when I was 64. At the end of every OYT voyage members of Sea Staff have a chat with the Skipper reviewing the trip and working out any additional training needs. During this chat I talked over both the decision and reasoning over. After arriving home I mulled over both the decision and the conversation for a few days before dropping an email to Mark, the CEO, and Caz, the COO, advising them of my decision, but committing to the three back to back voyages already booked at the end of the season.

Thus driving up to Southampton was a bitter, sweet experience as I knew it was going to be my last time that I would be joining Prolific.

Back to back trips are exhausting, both physically and mentally, and I had only done two trips 'back to back' in the past. I knew that was going to be more of a challenge, but had both the experience and resilience to cope, and the backing of some super skippers and Sea Staff.

On all three trips I was used as a mentor watch leader, there to guide and assist a trainee or newly qualified 3rd mate. The systems onboard Prolific are a big step up from many people's experience on a yacht. More lines, bigger lines, sails that look as big as a tennis court, and a bowsprit really do change the game. It takes time to be comfortable at this scale while also considering the skills and experience of the crew. Many have never sailed before and some, especially from the large cities, have never seen the sea. Being onboard for some is a challenge in itself.

Friday 10th October 2025

0000 hrs
Lat:
50° 53.70' N Long: 001° 23.53' W
Ocean Village, Southampton

0900 hrs
Breakfast followed by the big pack up and happy hour 'super style' on Prolific.

1100 hrs
End of voyage round up and presentation of certificates.

I am always one for doing things quietly and had made no mention to the crew that this was my last voyage, so was rather bowled over when a voyage certificate and card (signed by all onboard) was presented for the trip. Followed very rapidly by a cake to celebrate my eight years of volunteering! Ahh, that was reason why I had that wee trip in the electric boat. Rather red faced I was not allowed to slip quietly back into the shadows.

1500 hrs
Following lunch and getting Prolific ready for the next trip. Ironically, the same trip Adult Voyage for budding volunteers as I took many years before. I packed my kit, gave all the sea staff a big OYT hug and headed for the car and the drive back to Devon.

All times are UT.

Thursday 9th October 2025

0000 hrs
Lat:
50° 45.68' N 001° 17.66' W
Sheppards Quay, Cowes

0900 hrs
Breakfast, happy hour for Prolific and shore leave in Cowes. As the crew had two teaching staff I was able to have a wander on my own, but very, very disappointed that the usual ice cream shop had closed for the season! A quick look into the Musto and HH shop to have a look at their current wet weather gear and back to the marina for a shower.

1315 hrs
Slipped the pontoon and head towards Southampton on a sunny warm afternoon. As few had been up on the bowsprit Hope and I headed to the bow to let everybody who wanted to go onto it the chance.

Knowing this was my last day onboard as sea staff Unity was keen that I went out on the bowsprit, but I was more than happy to let Hope go out while I took up position inboard. Southampton Water with Fawley refinery is not the most picturesque stretch of water and nothing could replace the memory from a few years ago of being on the bowsprit as we headed up the channel into Poole at the sun was setting.

1615 hrs
Lat:
50° 53.70' N Long: 001° 23.53' W
Ocean Village, Southampton

Tied up alongside and with a few hours before supper the crew were allowed some free time. I spent a couple of hours watching a group of youngsters being youngsters playing on the pontoon, finding crabs and shells, skipping stones over the water and getting very, very wet, but loving every moment of it.

1930 hrs
I have always loved the small electric boat that Ocean Village Marina has and had mentioned that I would love at ride in it. Following supper Will said he had been to see the marina staff and they were happy to take me round the marina in it, I naturally jumped at the opportunity. Little realising this was all part of a cunning plan to get me off the boat for an hour or so.

All times are UT.

50° 53.71' N Long: 001° 23.43' W

0900 hrs
After breakfast the sea staff assembled for the round of jobs to do before the crew arrived. Getting the shopping from the Sainsbury's Van into the food lockers, freezer and several fridges always takes time when you are catering for about 20.

1200 hrs
Lunch and sea staff briefings. During the briefing I let everybody know that this was my last voyage with the trust, due to my failing hearing I was struggling to hear people both on deck and below.

1400 hrs
The crew arrive and we crack on with pre-voyage briefings, issue of kit and get supper started.

2000 hrs
Unusually, we slip from the marina and motor down Southampton Water to Ryde Bay. A different start to a trip, but it allowed everybody to get used to the feeling of being on the boat without the presure of winch drills.

Chatting to Hope on the fore deck it turned out that we had sailed before on a MACS trip a couple of years earlier. Lovely to see that another crew member had become a member of sea staff.

OYT Trip 47 of 2025 - Day 5

Sunday 5th October 2025

0000 hrs
Lat:
50° 45.66' N Long: 001° 17.64' W
Sheppards Yard, Cowes

0500 hrs
Following a second night of disturbed sleep due to creaking warps. The alarm had been set early as several boats wanted to do a 'pursuit' in the west Solent. Much to my surprise the crew were up without a complaint and the boat was made ready for sea in the dark.

0530 hrs
Slipped the mooring lines, the second boat of the fleet out of the marina.

0700 hrs
The unofficial start time for the unofficial pursuit. Chilly and windy, but a cracking sunrise in the eastern Solent.

I have zero interest in racing pursuits and really could not work out what was going on, but concentrated on getting the crew to tack when needed and nodded at the appropriate time when those who were getting excited needed some agreement.

An interesting discussion with the skipper developed on deck during a leg about my lack of excitement, Andy is a rather keen racer. It went along the lines of, 'There is a buoy, oh another buoy, now we are back at the buoy we started at and now we are passing Cowes again. We could have been at Poole by now had we been on passage'. We understood each other's position and it is all part of sailing. I shall and will always remain a passage maker.

0930 hrs
The pursuit having petered out, we headed back up Southampton Water while dropping sails and back to the berth at Ocean Village.

1200 hrs
Lat:
50° 53.71' N Long: 001° 23.43' W
Ocean Village, Southampton

Once alongside it was time for a second breakfast, packing and voyage wrap up. Following lunch the crew departed and new sea staff arrived. An afternoon doing boat and kit checks.

1930 hrs
Time to head off to the laundrette to wash some kit and head to the shower to get washed myself. After struggling with the washing machine I finally got it working and much to my surprise now have a tee shirt in delicate pink after being washed with my red socks!

Time for a quick pint with all the sea staff before heading back to Prolific.

Lat:

0800 hrs
A long creaking night! My bunk was right in the bow of the boat, just where all the warps were.

0945 hrs
With all sailing being abandoned a photographic scavenger hunt was arrainged devised for all crews. This lead to an interesting few hours wandering round Cowes finding things and performing tasks with a picture of the challenges. Once back at the boat a team of scorers visited to check the evidence.

The day was stunning sunny, bright with great visibility, if rather windy. In the Solent the sea churned with lots of low waves with white horses.

1400 hrs
All of the crews gather at a local sailing club for an afternoon's entertainment; a sailing related quiz and some construction activities using dry pasta and marshmallows.

0000 hrs
Lat:
50° 44.37' N Long: 001° 30.08' W
Yarmouth Marina, Isle of Wight

0800 hrs
On popping my head out on deck there was thick mist and drizzle! The forecast was talking about an incoming storm, Storm Amy, the second named storm I've been on Prolific.

Due to the lack of visibility it was decided to give the crew some shore time and we wandered round Yarmouth looking like drowned rats, popped into the local shop to stock up on sweets and headed out onto the pier.

0945 hrs
Slipped the lines and departed Yarmouth heading towards Cowes to meet up with other vessels from The Association of Sail Training Organisations as there was a planned 'race' tomorrow. Although with the Met Office forecasting a storm lots of phone calls between skippers and the organisers were happening.
